A dental assistant apprentice assists the dental officer (dentist) in the treatment of patients. They select instruments, mix dental filling materials for restoring defective teeth and clean and sterilize instruments. Other duties include assisting in specialty areas such as oral surgery, periodontics (treatment of gum disease), prosthodontics (replacement of missing teeth) and endodontics (root canal treatment). Assistants also take, develop and mount dental radiographs (x-rays). The apprentice may also serve as a dental hygienist, cleaning and polishing teeth and instructing patients on proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as diet and nutrition. The administration aspects of this career field include working at the reception desk, answering the phone, making appointments and filing dental records. Other duties include cleaning, lubricating and making minor adjustments and repairs to the dental equipment. Basic typing and/or computer skills are helpful. Manual dexterity is a plus. Assistants must have a sincere desire to serve on a healthcare delivery team, helping others. PAY CHART
