In the signals exploitation job, you'll be operating many types of highly advanced electronic equipment designed to monitor, measure and analyze many types of special noncommunication signal transmissions. Your duties will include the operation of electronic signal collection; search; and monitoring equipment, direction-finding systems and the latest in advanced receiving systems. You will be taught basic operation and use of several types signal analysis and measurement systems, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and analog recorders. You'll have a thorough understanding of electromagnetic signal concepts like AM and FM transmission systems, pulsed radar operation and all the characteristics associated with these signals that allow for complete, in-depth exploitation. Instructors guide students along a path from the origin of a signal at the transmitter, through the atmosphere and into a receiver. Various types of signal structures and transmission techniques will also be discussed. Some of the questions you will try to answer about radar and other electronic transmissions are: Where is the transmission coming from? What type of signal is it? And why is it there? (Early warning or weapons system related?) You'll learn why some signals are more important than others, what their purpose is and if anything must be done to counteract their presence. You also assist in preparing various urgent types of reports to be forwarded correctly and rapidly to those needing that information. Data you collect is used in war-fighting strategy and in the strategic monitoring of hostile forces throughout the world. A solid background in basic algebra and math skills is essential for the many intricate formulas used in collection and analysis of signals. A good background in science and hands-on equipment experience is not necessary but helpful. Computer familiarization is taught; some material is presented using computer-based instruction techniques. A large percentage of jobs in the 1N5 career field involve the use of computers in some capacity. PAY CHART
