You will work in a hospital laboratory as a histopathology apprentice and will receive and prepare surgical specimens for tissue diagnosis. You will prepare specimens for microscopic examination through manual or automated embedding procedures using a variety of chemical agents. You will maintain records of all surgical, cytological and autopsy specimens. You will prepare specimens and diagnostic reports for shipment to various military and civilian medical facilities. You will maintain laboratory instruments and equipment. The histopathology apprentice will assist the pathologist in performing postsurgical (autopsy) examination of specimens. Histopathology activities are normally conducted in the anatomic pathology section of the clinical laboratory. After graduation and after attaining the required work experience, you will be eligible to take a national registry examination and become a credentialed histopathology technician through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
