CAREERS

Ophthalmic Apprentice

You will assist an optometrist (eye doctor) in providing quality eye care for active-duty members, dependents and retirees. Your duties will include ordering glasses, making sure they're correct when they come back, fitting and adjusting them to the patient and making minor repairs. You will also teach patients how to put on and take off contact lenses and how to care for them. A good part of the day will be spent performing tests on patients to help the doctor diagnose each patient. The most rewarding part of the job is dealing with patients and helping them to see better and protect their sight. Following training, each technician is eligible to register for and take a civilian examination to qualify as a registered optometric assistant. The training you receive can be transferred to college credit along with further training on the job. Both school and on-the-job training can lead to an associate's degree in applied sciences.
