The services career field is wide ranging and covers a variety of areas. This career field prepares you well for civilian life, and further education could lead to a degree in hotel and restaurant management - a very lucrative field. As a services apprentice, you will have the opportunity to work in a variety of different areas - recreation, fitness and sports programs; food service facility; lodging facility; linen exchange; mortuary affairs; honor guard team; or a readiness program. In the capacity of performing the technical functions of this career field, you will operate fixed, bare base and portable food facilities and equipment. You will plan, prepare and adjust menus. Using sound fiscal practices, you will operate income-producing activities and establish resale merchandise prices, inventory levels and safeguarding procedures. When you are working in the transient quarter's area, you will be one of the first people that visitors to your base meet. It will be your responsibility to determine if there is housing available for them or direct them what to do if none is available. Another responsibility could be to train the unit fitness monitors in how to conduct fitness evaluations. You will explain the concept of fitness requirements and demonstrate proper conditioning procedures, weight training and aerobic equipment techniques. It will be your job to promote physical fitness participation to maintain the Air Force's high level of readiness. If you are assigned to mortuary affairs activities, you will be an extremely important person to the survivors of military members. You could arrange for transporting and disposition of remains or supervise search and recovery teams. The most important aspect of this part of the specialty will be to ensure that mortuary entitlements, escorts and military honors are arranged to make things as easy for the families as possible in this extremely stressful time.
